Dedication and Introduction

For more than 30 years, I’ve lived and worked with the teachings of Michael A. Singer, author of The Untethered Soul. My wife Stephanie Davis and I found the Temple of the Universe in 1992 when the roads were unpaved, and only a few sincere locals came to hear Mickey’s dharma talks. We both fell hard for the teachings. In the early 1990s, Mickey was known as much for being a computer programmer as he was for being a yogi. I was blown away by his technical knowledge, his business acumen, and his devotion to spirit and service. In my limited experience, spiritual people had never seemed to be capable of worldly success. Mickey was different. His teachings are less about obedience to a jealous creator and more of a beautiful synthesis of diverse religions, spirituality, and philosophy. His knowledge and appreciation for diverse teachings ignited my own thirst to have a well-rounded understanding of common themes and practices that have risen to the top of holistic thought. He made inner work practical and useful in the world. He presented his teachings as a sensible way to experience true success and enjoy life. My life and work with Mickey’s teachings helped me to want to do the right thing, not for money or achievements, but because when you do the right thing, you can live with yourself.

This course serves as a heartfelt tribute to Mickey and my Temple family, and it celebrates their dedication to personal growth and service. It’s an expression of deep gratitude to Mickey and a way to share the love and energy that I have been fortunate to live in for many years as a resident.

A profound learning that empowered me in my time with Mickey is that we all need to work towards our own inner truth. That work is no different from any kind of work. Building the habits of happiness and transformation takes effort, time, and focus. This workbook is designed to accompany a reading of The Untethered Soul and help one integrate its teachings with practices and experiential journaling. It takes the narrative approach and converts it into learning objectives with context and added resources. It is designed to help you learn about yourself and make the most of your time with the book. When your energies, focus and awareness grow, you will live in deep service to yourself and to others.
