Unlock: Awakening Consciousness

In the introduction to The Untethered Soul, Michael Singer quotes Shakespeare: “This above all: to thine own self be true, and it must follow, as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to any man.”

Singer goes on to explain that this book is a journey to the Self, an exploration of who we really are at our core. Part one of The Untethered Soul is about gaining knowledge of the self. It is about tuning your awareness to your own experience of life, seeing what is really happening inside you, and using that knowledge to make better choices about how you use your power as a human being. This includes the power of your mind, the energy center of your heart, and how you can let go of the obstructions to your energy in order to create more happiness.

The first four chapters of The Untethered Soul present the most vital concepts for this journey. In my own experience, if you read and fully understand these chapters, you will have gained most of what you need to grow. The concept of mindfulness has become an overused term these days, often reduced to marketing language aimed at those who see themselves as spiritually attuned. However, these four chapters can show you what mindfulness truly is in a practical and useful way. It is the most purposeful and valuable of the spiritual skills. This self-knowledge is what Shakespeare was referring to, because until you see what your mind is doing, you cannot be true to yourself. The mind is a thought-making machine, and these four chapters will help you learn to unmask its workings.
